Metro, the regional government for the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area, has been recycling latex paint since 1992, and, under the brand name MetroPaint, since 1999. What began as a low-tech solution for left over paint has grown into a sophisticated operation, recycling more than a quarter-million gallons of latex paint and generating over two-million U.S. dollars annually.
In 2009, MetroPaint was the first paint recycler to earn both the Master Painter’s Institute’s and Green Seal’s approval. Every batch of MetroPaint is subjected to strict performance testing before it is packaged into pails and cans for use by homeowners, contractors, businesses, non-profit organizations, and government agencies. Metro’s goal is to prevent good paint from going to the landfill and sells MetroPaint at a price intended only to cover the cost of the recycling program.
